God, Save My Marriage: How to Pray When all Hope is Gone by Prahlad Kumar
Contrary to popular opinion, prayer is not just a bunch of religious mumbo jumbo. Rather, it is actually “proven scientifically.” Let me explain. Scientists have done many studies linking the power of prayer to healing, reversing cancerous conditions and being responsible for miraculous changes in the health of a hopeless patient. If prayer is so powerful for physical health, why not implement it for marital health as well? Here are three ways you could start praying that just may turn your marriage around:
Prayer method number 1: pray for restoration in your marriage.
Now that you've set the foundation, you both may be more open to working on your issues, or giving them over to God so He can work on them. God may even give you specific direction regarding exactly what He wants you to do regarding a particular stumbling block in your relationship. For now, simply pray for healing, restoration, repair, and redemption of the past in your marriage. Ask God to remove past hurts, pain, and powerful negative emotions or memories. Ask God to enable the two of you to let go of the past and whatever faults you hold against your spouse. Then, when you sense the timing is right, communicate your hurts to your spouse, and what you want to do to fix your marriage after God has given you insight and direction.
Prayer method number 2: pray for intimacy in your marriage.
God is interested in your marriage. God hates divorce. When a Christian couple get married, it is a covenant before God and man. As it says in the Word, a chord of three strands is not easily broken, meaning that when you and your spouse are together as one and in relationship with God, this bond is much stronger than going it alone or even having a strong relationship with your spouse apart from God. One sure way to move toward intimacy in your marriage is to start praying together. Here's a great formula that works wonders; take 6 minutes once a week together (or more if you can) and pray this way for each other:
1. Give thanks to God for your partner (be specific).
2. Ask for forgiveness from God and your partner for any way that you've hurt your spouse.
3. Pray a blessing over your spouse (that their week would go well, work promotion, basically, good things)
When you pray together, you naturally draw closer to each other because you're drawing near to God together as a couple, which is His design.
Prayer method number 3: pray for unity in your marriage.
If you're looking to save your marriage or fix a marriage that was broken long ago, or even recently, pray for unity. Pray that you and your spouse would become one again, see eye to eye on things, that you and your husband would see each other as an encourager and partner as opposed to someone that discourages or is a threat to you in your marriage. Pray against division or any emotions that divide, such as anger, bitterness, resentment, jealousy and pride. Pray that God's Spirit would fill you both with peace, give you patience and understanding when interacting with your spouse, and help you to both be gracious and accepting with each other.
